Intent

Our firm intention is that when children leave Christ the Sower, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they develop pride in themselves and that they also understand the impact that they are capable of having on the lives of others, their community and the wider world. 

 PSHE  enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage our children to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community, underpinned by the strength of our core Christian values. In doing so, we help develop their self-worth. We teach them how society is organised and governed. We ensure that children experience the process of democracy through our School Parliament. We teach children about their rights and responsibilities. They learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse and multi-cultural society.

Our PSHE curriculum is  logically sequenced and develops learning over time, which results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen who is capable of making the right choices, both now and in their future roles within a global community.  With an ever changing society, we intend to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them, so that they understand how to celebrate differences and treat everyone with equality. This will then support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core CARE VALUES: teaching our children to make good choices, aspire highly, reflect on their own actions and those of others, and engage in their learning within school and beyond school.

Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives. 

Our PSHE curriculum will support them to:

• Develop positive and healthy relationships with their peers both now and in the future.
• Be reflective, resilient and independent learners, ready for life beyond primary school.
• Understand what is meant by a healthy lifestyle.
• Become thoughtful and respectful members of their community and hence active members of a democratic society, able to make informed choices regarding personal and social issues.
• Understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level.
• Have respect for themselves and others.
• Have positive body images.
• Know how to and have the vocabulary to keep themselves safe physically, mentally and technologically.

Implementation

• 45 minutes of PSHE is timetabled weekly in KS1 and KS2.
• The whole school take part in Education Awareness days and events like Anti-bullying week.
• We follow the PSHE association scheme of work,  which is approved by the Department of Education in line with statutory requirements and changes to ‘Relationships and Sex Education’ 2021.
• Units related to Relationships, Living in the wider world and Health and wellbeing.
• Children have the opportunity to reflect in all lessons.
• Promoting British Values and school values through our ‘CARE’ school rules of Choices, Aspiration, Reflection and Engagement.
• British Value assemblies are shared.
• External workshops take place over the year from various companies.

The planning for PSHE lessons at Christ the Sower are supported by the PSHE Association to support teachers when planning a personalised and flexible, age-appropriate PSHE education scheme of work over the course of a school year. Our overview which is thematic meaning all year groups will cover the same programme of study over the year developing skills in the specific areas. It enables us to develop our pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding based on the three core themes:

• Relationships
• Living in the wider world
• Health and Well-being

Content has been selected to ensure opportunities to explore the overarching concepts and to develop the essential skills and attributes set out in the Programme of Study, through a programme that is relevant and appropriate to the ethos of our school and the needs of our pupils. A spiral programme will revisit themes, gradually extending thinking, expanding knowledge and developing skills, rather than providing a series of ‘one-off’ topic.

Furthermore, our school teaches Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) using the Christopher Winter Project resources. RSE lessons at Christ the Sower give the children essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful relationships and staying safe both on and offline. 

Themed events 

Throughout the year, we hold themed weeks and days which highlight key themes and revisit concepts to help children know more and remember more, some examples of recent themed weeks and days are: 

• Anti bullying week
• Walk to school week
• Healthy eating week
• Health and wellbeing week
• E-safety Week 
• Mental Health Awareness day 

Wider Curriculum  

• We believe that focusing on developing a 'Growth Mindset' in our children will help them to build resilience, independence and confidence; embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of happiness. 
• We do this through the language we use in class, praising children for their efforts, and using language to encourage children to change their way of thinking. This supports both our school and PSHE aims and values, and we focus on Growth Mindsets in all aspects of school life.
• PSHE, including SMSC and British Values, are an integral part of the CARE CUltural curriculum, and is therefore woven into all other areas of the curriculum. 
• Visitors, such as emergency services, complement our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning.          
• Each year we invite the NSPCC in to conduct an assembly and workshops to encourage children to speak out and stay safe.
• We encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We challenge all of our pupils to look for opportunities to demonstrate that they are living through CARE (Making good CHOICES, ASPIRING highly, REFLECTING on themselves, their learning, their choices and their behaviour  and finally: ENGAGING fully in all aspects of life both in and out of school.                                                        
• Assemblies are linked to PSHE, British Values and SMSC and cover any additional sessions that would benefit the whole school.                                                        
• PSHE, British Values and SMSC displays throughout school reinforce the PSHE curriculum enabling children to make links.

Impact

By the time our children leave Christ the Sower Ecumenical Primary School they will:

• Be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
• Be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
• Appreciate difference and diversity
